Competency-based theological education (CBTE) represents a paradigm shift in theological education. CBTE offers an innovative way for seminaries and learning networks to raise a new generation of proven leaders trained in context, in the knowledge, skills, and character traits they need to prosper in their callings.
Competency-based theological education (CBTE) focuses on practical ministry disciplines, skills, knowledge, and character. CBTE aims to prepare students to be effective leaders in ministry by helping them develop the skills, knowledge, and character traits they need to succeed. CBTE programs differ from traditional higher education in several ways, including:
Self-paced: Students can move through the program at their own pace.
Hands-on learning: CBTE programs emphasize hands-on learning with supervision from mentors and coaches.
Personality-related competencies: CBTE considers personality-related "soft" competencies as important as academic knowledge, skills, and abilities.
CBTE programs are designed to guide students toward holistic growth in their ministry contexts. Students receive feedback and explanations of how well they've met competencies from their Faculty Mentor, who also provides guidance to help students meet any lacking competencies. Programs also include a coherent plan for assessing competencies, using performance-based assessment tools, clear rubrics, and benchmarks.
Our contextual partner, Kairos University, seeks to embrace the reality that following Jesus requires us to see how each part of our lives is deeply connected to the other. How we see, understand, and practice those connections will be deeply impacted by our faith tradition, context, vocation, formational history, and much more. As a result, we need a journey of discipleship – a journey of human development – that empowers followers of Jesus to flourish in their vocations, whatever those may be.
The following degrees are offered at NTS as a Kairos Contextualization Partner:
Master of Arts (MA)
Master of Arts in Non-Profit Leadership (MAL)
Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
Doctor of Theology (ThD)
